Frequently Asked Questions About Osteopathy
Welcome to our FAQ page. Here you'll find answers to some of the most common questions about osteopathy and our practice, so you can feel confident and at ease when starting treatment for yourself or your family.
Your First Visit
Your First Appointment
We understand that a first visit can feel a little daunting, especially for your little one. Here's what you can expect during your first appointment.
What happens during a consultation?
We begin with a detailed conversation about your concerns and medical history. This is followed by a gentle physical examination to identify areas of restriction, after which we may begin the first treatment.
What should I bring?
For babies, feel free to bring their own blanket or muslin cloth, as well as their health record. If your baby is bottle-fed, you are welcome to bring a bottle in case they get hungry. There is always time during the treatment to feed or comfort your baby if needed.
Â
For toddlers and older children, you can bring a familiar cuddly toy, book, or favorite toy. Of course, we also have plenty of toys available at the practice.
Â
For adults, we usually work with you in your underwear during the treatment. If you don't feel comfortable with this, you're very welcome to bring a pair of sports shorts or other comfortable clothing.
How long does a session take?
An initial consultation takes approximately 45 minutes. We take plenty of time for the intake and a thorough examination, so you never need to feel rushed.
Is the examination painful?
Not at all. Our osteopath uses very gentle, child-friendly techniques based on subtle pressure and movement. Your child can stay close to you or play during the treatment.
Do I need a referral?
No. You can book an appointment directly with an osteopath. You do not need a prescription or referral.
Not sure whether osteopathy could be helpful for you or your child? Feel free to get in touch. We're happy to discuss your situation and help you decide whether osteopathy may be appropriate.
Fees & Insurance Reimbursement
We believe healthcare should be accessible and transparent. Here you'll find all the information about the cost of treatment and how it may be reimbursed by your health insurance provider.
How much does an osteopathic treatment cost?
A standard 45-minute consultation costs €65. A different fee applies for a short follow-up consultation or a baby check-up. We always aim to provide the most effective care within the agreed consultation time.
Is osteopathy covered by insurance?
Belgian patients
Â
Depending on your health insurance fund and/or hospital insurance, you may be entitled to partial reimbursement for your treatment.
Â
For example:
-
Most Belgian health insurance funds provide reimbursement for up to 5 treatments per calendar year.
-
Helan provides a higher reimbursement for up to 6 treatments per calendar year.
-
Some hospital and supplementary insurance plans, such as DKV or Medicalia, may provide additional reimbursement.
-
Many hospital insurance plans also provide reimbursement for osteopathy for babies during the first three to six months after birth.
Â
After each treatment, you will receive a certificate that you can submit to your health insurance fund and/or hospital insurance provider.
Would you like to know in advance how much you may be reimbursed? Please contact your insurance provider for the specific terms and conditions.
International Patients
Â
International patients are very welcome at Novia. Reimbursement options vary depending on your country, insurance provider, and policy. We therefore recommend checking with your own insurance provider in advance to find out whether osteopathic treatment is covered.
After each consultation, we can provide you with an invoice that you can submit to your insurance provider.
What if I need to change my appointment?
We understand that things can come up. Please let us know at least 24 hours in advance if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, so we can offer the time to another patient.
For late cancellations or missed appointments, an administrative fee of €25 will be charged. This fee is not reimbursed by your insurance provider.
How can I pay after my session?
Payment is easy and can be made by:
-
Debit card
-
QR code
-
Cash

Safety & Treatment
Is osteopathy safe for my baby?
Absolutely. Our treatments for babies and children are extremely gentle and do not involve forceful techniques or cracking. We use subtle, relaxing touch to support your child's body's natural ability to recover.
Are the techniques painful?
No, osteopathy at Novia focuses on comfort and gentleness. While adults may sometimes feel light pressure or stretching, the aim is always to release tension without forcing through pain. We listen to what your body can handle at that moment.
When is osteopathy (not) appropriate?
Osteopathy is suitable for many types of complaints, but it is not a substitute for emergency medical care. In cases of acute infection, fever, or suspected fractures, we will refer you directly to a doctor. We assess at every appointment whether treatment can be carried out safely.
How many treatments will I need?
This varies from person to person and depends on the nature of your complaints. Acute complaints often improve within a few treatments. Chronic complaints usually require a longer course of care, which we will discuss together. You are also welcome to come for a preventive check-up, even if you have no complaints, to identify movement restrictions at an early stage. We always evaluate together how your body responds and adjust the treatment plan accordingly.
