Your first appointment
- Frequently Asked Questions about Osteopathy -

We understand that a first visit can feel a little daunting, especially for your little one. Here is exactly what to expect.

What happens during a first consultation with the osteopath?

We start with a thorough conversation about your complaints and medical history. This is followed by a gentle physical examination to map out any blockages, followed by a first treatment.

What should I bring to the osteopath?

For babies, feel free to bring your own blanket or muslin cloth and your baby's health record booklet. Is your baby bottle-fed? Then bring a feed in case they get hungry. There is plenty of time during the treatment to feed or comfort your baby if needed.

Toddlers and older children are welcome to bring a favourite cuddly toy, book or toy. Of course, there are also plenty of toys at the practice.

For adults, we usually work with you in your underwear. Not comfortable with that? You're welcome to bring (sports) shorts.

How long does an osteopathic treatment take?

A first consultation lasts about 45 minutes on average. We take plenty of time for the intake conversation and a careful examination, so you never need to feel rushed.

Is an osteopathic examination painful?

An osteopathic examination should not be painful. We adapt our techniques to the patient's age, needs and comfort. The osteopath uses very gentle, child-friendly techniques based on subtle pressure and movement. Your child can simply stay with you or play during the treatment.

Do I need a prescription for osteopathy?

No. You can book an appointment with an osteopath directly; no prescription or referral is needed.
Not sure whether osteopathy could help you or your child? Feel free to get in touch and we'll gladly think it through with you.

Prices & Reimbursement

We believe our care should be accessible and transparent. Here you'll find all the information about the cost of a treatment and how it is reimbursed by your insurer.

How much does a treatment with the osteopath cost?

A standard 45-minute consultation costs €65. We charge an adjusted rate for a short follow-up or a baby check. We always aim to provide the most effective care within the agreed time.

Is osteopathy reimbursed?

Patients insured in Belgium

Depending on your health insurance fund (mutualiteit/mutualité) and/or hospitalisation insurance, (part of) the treatment is reimbursed.

Some examples:

  • Most health insurance funds contribute towards 5 treatments per calendar year.

  • Helan offers a higher contribution, covering 6 treatments per calendar year.

  • Some hospitalisation and supplementary insurance policies, such as DKV or Medicalia, offer additional reimbursement.

  • Many hospitalisation insurance policies also contribute towards osteopathy for babies during the first three to six months after birth.

After each treatment you receive a certificate that you can submit to your health insurance fund and/or hospitalisation insurer.
Want to know in advance what reimbursement you're entitled to? Contact your insurer for the specific conditions.

Patients from the Netherlands or insured abroad

You are very welcome too. Reimbursement varies by insurer and policy; (partial) reimbursement is often possible under the rules for healthcare received abroad. You'll receive an invoice after the session for this purpose.

What if you need to change your appointment?

We understand that things come up. Please let us know at least 24 hours in advance so we can help another patient in your place. For late cancellations or no-shows, an administrative fee of €25 is charged, which is not reimbursed by your insurer.

How can I pay after the session?

You can pay easily by:

  • Bank card

  • QR code

  • Cash

Safety & Gentleness

Is osteopathy safe?

Yes, osteopathy is a safe form of treatment when it is performed by a recognised, well-trained osteopath. Treatment is tailored to your body, complaints and health. We always use gentle, respectful techniques and take any medical considerations into account.

Are the techniques painful?

No, osteopathy at Praktijk Novia focuses on comfort and gentleness. Although you may sometimes feel light pressure or a stretch, the aim is always to release tension without forcing through pain. We listen to what your body can handle.

When is osteopathy (not) appropriate?

Osteopathy is suitable for many complaints, but it is no substitute for emergency medical care. In case of acute infection, fever or a suspected fracture, we refer you directly to a doctor. At every appointment, we check that treatment can take place safely.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments differs from person to person and depends on the nature and duration of the complaints. During treatment, we evaluate progress together and look at what is appropriate at that point. A few sessions are often enough, while in other situations more time is sometimes needed.
